Biodata IT South Africa

1 April 2006

Rivonia-based Biodata IT South Africa was established in 2001 as a daughter company of German IT security solutions manufacturer Biodata IT AG which specialised in the hardware encryption of ISDN lines. In 2002, the daughter company became independent and has since then been a distributor of IT security solutions for mainly Sub-Saharan Africa.
"We have substantially enhanced our product portfolio with a considerable variety of IT security solutions but, historically Biodata has years of experience, especially in the encryption field which used to be the core product of our former German holding," says marketing director Ingrid Reimschüssel.
One of Biodata IT's main product lines is the Utimaco Safeguard solutions with which notebooks, PDAs, e-mails and file servers can be encrypted. Utimaco was positioned first in the Gartner's Leaders Quadrant for Mobile Data Protection and according to Gartner, is a company with strong vision which invests in developments that surpass the current buying criteria of the market. Since 2002, Biodata IT has been the sole distributor of DICA, German manufacturer of ISDN line encryption devices. With encryption devices installed in more than 50 countries worldwide, DICA's range of products encrypts video conferences, telephone conversations and fax transmissions.
In January this year, Biodata signed an agreement with Kobil and introduced its first encrypted memory stick with integrated smartcard. The size of the device is only 8 cm, it weighs 13 grams and the software is already integrated. Kobil mIDentity includes an E4 smartcard with SIM card size which enables numerous computer independent applications, such as network authentication, single sign-on, data backup, outlook synchronisation, digital signature as well as the encryption of e-mails and data with international standards like Triple-DES and RSA.
Chris Runte, director of Biodata IT explains: "Encryption is a vital instrument to protect a company's confidential data or communication. With the increasing security attacks that allow industrial espionage and theft of intellectual property, organisations are exposed to major financial risks. With better understanding and knowledge of how security attacks can undermine an organisation, chief information and technology officers will be able to justify the value of the investment in enterprise security management."
Besides the encryption products mentioned, Biodata IT SA distributes IT security solutions such as patch management, content and network security.
