Bandit tracking

1 August 2002

Car thieves have learned that a stolen vehicle can be hidden from the 'eye in the sky' by parking in an undercover parking garage or under a bridge. This is done to allow them time to plan and execute the getaway actions of the vehicle.
Ross Hickey, managing director of Trinity Telecomms (who distribute Wavecom's GSM vehicle tracking products in South Africa) says that the advantage of GSM technology over satellite tracking is that the vehicle does not need to be in an unobstructed visual line with the tracking device to be able to accurately locate it.
Another advantage of GSM technology is that it is cost effective to use in fleet and truck management. Fleet owners can track their vehicles via the Internet and have management control over the routes their drivers take and the time spent loading or off-loading the vehicles.
