Acer announces its Altos R500 server, a general purpose rack-optimised server targeted at environments requiring high-density platforms, such as application servers in the Internet arena (ISPs and ASPs), load balancing in server farms (iDCs) and front-end servers for e-Business applications. Users are provided with the choice of single or dual Intel Pentium III processors, 1,13 or 1,26 Ghz. The Altos R500 features up to 4 GB of ECC SDRAM, PC 133 memory and three one-inch hot-swappable hard-drive bays, coupled with drive capacities of up to 73 GB. In addition, the product helps solve network storage issues with dual U160 SCSI channels and four on-board LAN connections for maximum LAN uptime. Multiple Altos R500 servers can be used together in a clustering solution.
Availability is said to be guaranteed by using hot-swappable hard-drives with an optional on-board RAID controller and another area of redundancy - four on-board 10/100 Ethernet ports - ensures that the Altos R500 stays connected even in the event of a multiple-links failure. The server's I/O slots also include two 64-bit/66 MHz PCI slots for the latest add-on cards.
